Choosing Us

My name is Henry, and after 40 years of marriage and raising four children, my wife Denise and I finally planned a quiet, romantic trip to Oregon’s coast for our 40th anniversary. We envisioned peaceful moments together—coffee by the waves, long walks, and cozy evenings without distractions or responsibilities.

But our youngest daughter, Amanda, learned of our plans. Known for her persuasive ways, she dropped by one evening with her two kids and soon suggested turning our couple’s getaway into a family trip. Despite Denise’s polite reminder that this trip was just for us, Amanda seemed surprised and disappointed. Over coming weeks, she pushed harder, proposing other locations and appealing to our family values.

Though Denise began to waver, tempted by the idea of making memories with the grandkids, I reminded her of how much we had longed for a quiet escape. Still, wanting to avoid conflict, we switched gears and booked a family-friendly resort in Florida, covering most expenses.

As the trip neared, Amanda’s requests escalated—snacks for the kids, babysitting during spa days, and finally, handling bedtime so she and her husband could enjoy nights out. It became clear that our anniversary was being sacrificed for unpaid childcare duties.

Quietly, I called the airline and rebooked our original Oregon trip without telling Denise until it was set. When I shared the surprise, she was overjoyed. The next day, I informed Amanda we weren’t coming, explaining the trip was for us alone. She was angry, but I stood by our choice.

Our week in Oregon was exactly what we needed—time to reconnect, laugh, and remember us. Amanda’s family went to Florida, facing the challenges of traveling with young children without backup. Though Amanda never apologized, her tone softened in later calls. Sometimes, loving your family means valuing your own time, too. Our anniversary was less about place and more about choosing each other once again.
