Julia Roberts: From Laughter and Nostalgia to Tragedy, an Icon We Will Always Remember

Julia Roberts, long regarded as one of Hollywood’s most glamorous leading ladies, surprised both fans and critics when she looked almost completely different while filming deeply emotional scenes for the acclaimed drama August: Osage County. The actress, widely recognized for her unforgettable portrayal of Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman (1990), set aside her familiar red-carpet elegance to portray a raw and emotionally exposed character in the adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

While filming in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Roberts looked far removed from the polished movie star audiences have admired for decades. Instead, she appeared understated and unglamorous, dressed in loose blue jeans, a basic cream-colored top beneath a white button-down shirt, with very little styling. Her long brunette hair, normally arranged with a touch of sophistication, was deliberately left messy, perfectly mirroring the emotional turmoil surrounding her character, Barbara Weston.

Roberts’ dramatic transformation was an intentional break from her glamorous Hollywood persona. Taking on the role of Barbara, a woman desperately trying to keep her troubled family together following the disappearance of their alcoholic patriarch, demanded that the actress prioritize emotional realism rather than appearance.

During the powerful sequence filmed that day, Julia Roberts was accompanied by co-star Wan Gregorio, who plays her estranged husband, Bill Fordham. The two were seen walking hand in hand toward a boat dock, accompanied by a sheriff who had been assigned the painful responsibility of identifying a deceased body.

As the scene progressed, Roberts’ character broke down in tears, releasing her grief through an intense and hysterical performance. McGregor’s character tried to console her, wrapping his arms around her as she completely fell apart. The deeply distressing scene highlighted the emotional intensity of August: Osage County, a story centered on family dysfunction, hidden secrets, and the difficult bonds that continue to connect those we love.
