It was a predictably lively night in Los Angeles this past Sunday as the 96th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theater.

Among the evening’s most memorable moments were John Rena’s naked appearance across the stage while presenting the award for Best Costume Design, along with Al Pacino’s choice to bypass the Best Film nominees and immediately announce the winner.

The red carpet also provided plenty for people to talk about, particularly the large number of striking outfits on display. According to reports, actress Kelly Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, were among the couples who attracted plenty of attention, with Ripa especially becoming a topic of discussion across social media.

Celebrities receiving headlines because of their fashion choices at major award ceremonies is certainly nothing unusual.

However, in today’s social media era, where red carpet photos can instantly be viewed and shared worldwide, discussing and debating celebrity outfits in real time has arguably become more popular than ever.

With that in mind, it’s hardly surprising that an event as significant as the Oscars—and the celebrities lucky enough to attend—is bound to receive intense scrutiny.

Among the stars whose fashion choices were closely examined online this year was Kelly Ripa, who shared a photo of her outfit—a dazzling black, sheer gown—on Instagram with the caption: “Mom and dad storming the red carpet.”

The post was quickly met with an outpouring of praise from her many fans.

“You both look amazing. BUT that dress is stunning ❤❤❤,” one person commented.

“Beautiful gown. Beautiful couple,” another wrote.

“Kelly, your hair, the dress… you look gorgeous,” a third fan said.

Of course, the reaction wasn’t entirely positive. Some people questioned Ripa’s choice to wear the revealing gown.

“I love you Kelly but not this dress,” one critic commented.

Another wrote: “Unlike Mark not to have a perfectly tailored suit or tux on. His clothes are usually impeccable.”

A third person said: “Kelly wear some bike shorts. You are lowering your self in the see through dress. You’re better than that!”
