The Setup
When my best friend Mia urged me to meet her boyfriend’s friend, I was hesitant. Blind dates usually meant awkward silences and forced smiles, but Mia promised, “He’s one of the good ones.” Against my better judgment, I agreed.
First Impressions
Eric seemed charming from the start — polite messages, genuine questions about my interests, and a dinner complete with roses and a small keychain engraved with my initial. “You look incredible,” he said as conversation flowed effortlessly. By the end of the night, I thought maybe Mia had been right after all.
The Shock
The next morning shattered that illusion. In my inbox sat an email titled “Invoice for Last Night.” It itemized dinner, drinks, flowers — and, unbelievably, “Emotional Labor – $50 (for maintaining engaging conversation).” At the bottom, he added a threat: “Failure to comply may result in Chris hearing about it.” The charm was gone, replaced by control and entitlement.
Lesson Learned
When Mia and her boyfriend found out, they sent Eric a mock invoice of their own — charging him for “acting like a walking red flag.” I blocked him immediately. That night taught me something priceless: real kindness doesn’t come with conditions, fine print, or receipts — and sometimes, politeness hides a warning sign.
